Songs For A Break Up, Vol. 1
Future Sounds
Rating: 4.75 out of 5

Ah, and I’m in love. Here’s an EP I highly recommend. Think Northern Soul meets Hall & Oats meets Phil Spectre. From the Southern side of things, Al Green’s producer Willie Mitchell might well have been on the knobs for this production. It hops, dances, and trips through some amazing grooves.
I’m completely able to overlook the fact that these tunes are revivals of a long gone era. There’s a freshness and honesty here that hits you over the head like a lovely sledgehammer. Fitz & The Tantrums go five for five on this EP and don’t slip and fall for a beat or a measure. Every song from the opener, “Breakin’ The Chins Of Love” to the closer, “We Don’t Need Love Songs” hits the mark.
The only thing I could critically say about these five songs are that the break-beats are re-hashed and have been heard a thousand times since they first hit the airwaves out of Detroit and Nashville, but even then the recordings are so lovingly tended to that you don’t notice that fact until the umpteenth listen.
Buy this EP. Then buy it for a friend. Put it on repeat and make love to it all night long.
