There really is not much difference between Herzig on disc and Herzig live. Sure a song like “Sumatra” from her 2008 release Apple Tree is more intimate when you strip away the shellac of professional mixing and added overdubs, but the essence of the song remains and in Herzig’s world, that’s what counts.
The Nashville artist spent one day in the studio with Claire Indie on cello and Jordan Hamlin on guitar, accordion and ukelele. Taking songs off of Apple Tree, you will find comfort not in its simplicity but in the songs themselves, as well as an appreciation that she did not have to jump too far to rework these songs.
Songs like the flirty “Hey Na Na” and the soft-lit “Jenny Lynn” flawlessly fall into the basket of Apple Tree songs like the promiscuous “Songbird” and the philosophical “I Hurt Too.”
The beauty of this album is that Herzig does a marvelous job at keeping things moving and by creating a sense of intrigue, she deserves your attention. A voice like that, you won’t mind to just sit back and let her tell you all about it.
