After listening to Setting The Pace, I feel like I lived down the street from this band somewhere around the mid-’90s. Their lyrical spinning is filled with realism and descriptive color that breath life into their stories, giving you the feeling that you were there.
Remember when you slept in pajamas way too small for you? Oh and when the neighbors were not home and you slept on the lawn? We’ve totally been friends since 1989, dude. I remember it like it was yesterday!
Okay, maybe I don’t, but you get the idea. Boat tackles the things they know and by doing that, Setting The Pace is an album that preserves time and essence in such a distinctive and comfortable way.
And their homage to the Talking Heads’ “And She Was” in “We Want It, We Want It” is fitting even in its quirkiness. “We had a tractor beam – We want it! We want it! We had a winning team – We want it! We want it!” It’s a glorious way to bring the past and the present together. “They are doing things that ain’t never been seen…way out into the ocean, you can snuggle up to me,” they continue.
Most of this album bends more towards a Michael Stipe’s lyrical enrichment of life and social constants than the Byrnism of the “this is what it is not” ideology.
But one thing in common is that this is a band very happy to be making music for the sake of music; the posturing is up front and direct sometimes becoming a hinderance to the efforts of pushing the limits the band if comfortable with.
What it does do is maintain a fair balance of indie pop songs you can enjoy, and that is the true charm here.
