First glance at City Boy Lemon, the band reminded me of an indie rock version of an early Prick, not so much for the correlation of music and vocals as it was the correlation of spirit. City Boy Lemon is speckled with a rally-in-the-streets attitude without waving the Spirit of ’76 flag in the air.
Although “Simple Men” opens the album with a not-so-desirable picture of the band, it is the song “Welcome To The Sun” that you immediately will cherish. Fast-moving and rebellious, Hotel St. George creates a blur of rock and roll bands like Husker Du and Naked Raygun did — raw, organic and convulsive.
There is plenty of Bowieness that spreads like wildfire in this album, along with the sounds of ’70s and ’80s New York from from your Lou Reeds to your Televisions. “Good In The Bad” and “All The Rich Folk” proves that they can turn up the volume in all of their alt-rock glory. And with that in mind, “Island Man” and the title track just cancel each other out with out of tune acoustic rubbish.
City Boy Lemon is the good, the bad, and the raucous.
