Christian McKee’s voice is the first thing you recognize when popping in his latest EP. His tonal qualities are comforting and even though his songwriting puts him out on strings (“I tried to tell you but it don’t make no difference. All this pain might be gone by today,” from the song “I Can’t Love You That Way”), he sings like a good friend spending an evening hanging out on the front porch.
Six One Two, the third EP in his resume is chock full of ‘80s sensibilities — not just the synths but the way he captures his intimate moments on tape beckons the conceptual balladry of Adams, Ocean, Lewis — but the way he touches on the decade’s style and brings it out, he does it soulfully and incorporates a nice mesh between the music and himself.
“Better This Way” could easily be tucked in to late ‘80s Moby repertoire. McKee follows it by putting on his indie hat and trying it out on “Like I Needed You To,” a more inconsistent moment in the album compared to the smoothness of “I’ll Find You There.”
For a solo endeavor in every sense, McKee’s ideas are captivating.
