Think About Life intros their latest album Family with one of the damn catchiest tunes you have heard in a while. Even though it begins with a flute that will make you confused that you may have accidentally slipped on a Antonis Carlos Jobim or Les Baxter album. But the repetitive disco/funk electronic spin will set you in the right direction. And when the band kicks it into full function, you will be wanting to kick out the funkiest of ‘80s dance moves this side of a soul train line.
I could end this review right now, but there is a whole album ahead of me when in actuality I’ve replayed “Johanna” too many times to count now.
And when you can describe “Havin My Baby” as someone doing their best karaoke of an Erasure song, you will want to revert back to the one true song that stands out like a disco ball.
There really are more stand out songs on this album. And even though “Sweet Sixteen” is like doing an impersonation of Bloc Party, I would like to think of the song as more inspired by Fun Boy Three.
“Set You On Fire” will help you choose between the best in rehashed ‘80s fashion as neon colors bleed down from JC Penny racks. And as quirky as “Sofa Bed” is, it’s a great song.
The first half of the album may boast the greatest song on this release, but the last half of Family is most consistently good than the songs that hiccup with outlandish behavior.
