The Glitch Mob – Wave of Exuberation

Towards the end of a lengthy tour, Los Angeles’ The Glitch Mob have been shaking booties from the world city of London to the summer Tennessee heat of Bonnaroo and everything else in between. Whenever you think about this band, you cannot help but have big beats, wide-scoped sampling, and introspective elements go hand in hand.w And even though their debut album Drink The Sea (Glass Air) starts out like a coldwave symphony, the infectious hip hop and IDM beats contort with something that is bigger than both styles combined.

It’s not just the intense passion this band has for their music and the instrumentation projected forth (all the members play instruments as well as DJ) that caught people’s attention, it’s them taking all of this — what they created — to the next level, and that is what they have done with their live shows.

“We took the feeling from the audience and put a different spin on the album live,” said Justin. “This is the very first tour where we play the album in its entirety, and by tweaking it, we give the audience a more engaging live show, along with mashing that old stuff all together.”

This is also how the band has appeared vibrant and alive on stage, like each show they play is their first.

“It has been such a great way to re-interpret the songs,” he continued.

This sound has steamed from the London underground of the ‘90s and breakbeat pioneers from Squarepusher to Leftfield to the estranged experimental sounds of Aphex Twin and Autechre. The difference between now and then is that in the four years of existence, The Glitch Mob has taken their beats farther and higher than their predecessors. With that comes a new perspective of intensity, mystery and sound expose. We are experiencing the future of electronic music now. And Drink The Sea is the at the apex of their momentum.

“The album is at its purist form,” he said. “It’s introspective and cinematic. When making this album, we were not expecting what it would be for the general public. We were making this album for ourselves. What you hear is basically us sitting down and pouring out ideas in a stream of consciousness.”

What came out of these ideas was a long and difficult process that was riddled with technical glitches and obstacles.

“We had worked on ideas for about a year. We finally just sat down and started it from scratch. It was a huge challenge to get out of our comfort zone and come up with a new aesthetic with technology to get the sound that you want.”

The band loves to keep things moving. In 2009, they pulled a Kiss maneuver and released solo albums from each member. After Drink The Sea, they put together Drink The Sea Part II: The Mixtape, a re-interpretation of the album through the mixing of various big name Hip Hop and Pop stars like Lil’ Wayne, Drake, and more. To top it off, it’s a freebie to the public.

“We would go to a show with 500 CDs and people would end up going away with something,” he said. “We really believe in giving things away. It’s a good way to show appreciation to our fans and get our music out to the people.”

As they keep finding new ways of doing things, the future looks bright for The Glitch Mob.

“We are the type of misfits who love the challenge. Whatever we do in the future we will make something really big.”
